The announcement, made ahead of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s three-day visit to India starting Wednesday, sets the tone of collaboration between the two countries.
Wednesday, December 15, 2010: Chinese telecom gear maker Huawei has announced plans to invest more than $2 billion in India in research and manufacturing. The money will be used over the next five years for setting up a new R&D campus in Bengaluru, an equipment manufacturing facility at Sriperumbudur near Chennai and to sew a number of business partnerships in the country. Huawei also plans to ramp up its R&D emplyee strength from the current 2,000 to 3,000.
“The comprehensive five-year plan will focus on the development, augmentation and cooperation in the areas of local R&D, local manufacturing, technology cooperation with Indian IT service companies, local sourcing, local employment, talent development, and supporting rural education and IT literacy in India,” said a company statement.
Meanwhile, Huawei has also started its first-phase local manufacturing in the southern Indian city of Chennai and is further exploring other forms of co-operation in local manufacturing.
With operations in 19 major regions, Huawei currently has 6,000 employees in India. The Chinese company has plans to establish resource hubs for training engineers in multiple locations in India. These initiatives are likely to generate employment for 4,000-5,000 people in the country.
